200 Workers at XL Foods in Moose Jaw Receive Lay-off Notice
April 24, 2009 - Early this morning XL Foods made an announcement to all of their staff that the Moose Jaw plant will be on immediate lay-off for up to five months. The employer has indicated that this lay-off is taking place due to a shortage of cattle in Saskatchewan.

“This notice came as a complete shock to both the employees and the union” said UFCW Local 1400 President Norm Neault. “These members, whose Collective Agreement expired on January 31, 2009 have not received any indication during the negotiation process that there was any potential for plant slowdown.”

The employer ended bargaining discussions early on April 1 and cancelled scheduled dates for April 2 and 3, 2009 when the parties reached an impasse over the employer’s proposal to force employees to work up to eight hours of mandatory overtime per week.

Further bargaining dates are set for May 14 and 15, 2009 with the assistance of a Conciliation Officer from the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board.

“This layoff will come as a blow to not only these 200 workers and their families, but to the entire community of Moose Jaw. We will work with our members closely and help them in any way possible” commented Neault.
