Looming Assault on Labour

UFCW Canada Locals 1400 and 248P are denouncing the Saskatchewan Party government's effort to fast track consultations with the public and interested stakeholders on sweeping changes to 15 pieces of labour legislation. Even though the overhaul would affect every worker in the province, Premier Brad Wall and Labour Relations Minister Don Morgan are only providing citizens and organizations with 90 days to submit their ideas for change on everything from collective bargaining for healthcare to workplace safety to the minimum wage.

"A three-month consultation period for a complete overhaul of labour legislation, some of which has been in place since Tommy Douglas was in office, is completely unfair and unreasonable," says Local 1400 President Norm Neault. Read full press release...

Asian Heritage Month

May is designated each year as Asian Heritage Month by virtue of an official declaration signed by the Canadian government in 2002.  According to the Declaration, immigrants from East Asia, Southern Asia, Western and Southeast Asia have brought Canadian society a rich cultural heritage. Over the last two centuries, these immigrants have contributed to the Canadian arts, science, sport, business, civil society and government, making this country one of the most culturally diverse and prosperous nations on the planet.  By designating May as Asian Heritage Month, the Declaration offers a month-long opportunity for Canadians to acknowledge, highlight and celebrate the valuable talents and skills of Asian-Canadians. Jimmy's Law

Following the death of a gas station worker's death in Yorkton last year, the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party introduced 'Jimmy's Law' in the legislature as an amendment to the OH&S Act. The changes would require employers to schedule a minimum of two employees for late night shifts or ensure that workers are safe behind locked doors or barriers. This has resulted in a private member’s bill by Saskatoon-Centre MLA David Forbes, and a renewed push for the legislation has begun, with a new petition to show support. UFCW supports David Forbes and his NDP colleagues who are working to make Jimmy's Law a reality. Read more

Ask Target for Fairness

By now we all know that Target is going to convert more than 100 Zellers stores, with the first wave of conversions scheduled for completion early next year. Although Target has clearly said that it will not allow Zellers workers to keep their jobs once their workplaces are converted, you and all retail workers in Canada have certain rights under the law that prevent employers from firing and rehiring a person to do the same job, on the same site, for less.

By sticking together with other Zellers workers – and with the full support of Canada’s largest retail workers’ union – you and your coworkers can best protect your future by taking full advantage of your rights under the law. Together, you will have a stronger voice on the job, and you will make Target an even better place to work and shop.
