Ø    What about union dues?

There is no secret about our union duesAll union dues are tax deductible and will range between $6.50 and $12.00 per week in your workplace depending on how much money you make. No dues are paid until a union contract has been approved by you and your co-workers. In almost all cases the wage increase in your union contract more than pay for your dues. There are no initiation fees for current employees.

Ø    What are my rights to join a union?

Section three of the Saskatchewan Trade Union Act states:

“Employees have the right to organize in and to form, join or assist trade unions and to bargain collectively through a trade union of there own choosing:......”        

Ø    What can management do if I want to join the UFCW?

Section 11(1)(a) of the Saskatchewan Trade Union Act states:

“It shall be an unfair labour practice for an employer, employers agent or any person acting on behalf of the employer: in any manner including by communication, to interfere with, restrain, intimidate, threaten or coerce an employee in the exercise of any right conferred by this act.”

Ø    What kind of things should I watch for:

1)    Threats of discipline or termination.

2)    Managers making negative remarks about unions.

3)    Managers questioning employees about the union or

taking union literature away from employees.

 

4)    Threats of closure.

5)    Threats or promises about what will happen if the union gets in or doesn’t get in.
