Under Section Three (3) of the Saskatchewan Trade Union Act, every employee is free to be a member of a trade union and to participate in its lawful activities. This means that you and your co-workers have the legal right to organize. Workers who wish to organize should contact the UFCW Local 1400 office at 306.384.5787 or 1.800.274.4036 and ask to speak to a union representative.
Employers cannot intimidate, threaten or coerce you about your decision to sign a union card. Many workers are afraid their employer will know whether or not they signed a card. This is simply not true. Your decision to sign a card is confidential. Under the law only the person involved, the union representatives, and the Labour Relations Board (LRB) are aware of who signed.
If over 50% of eligible workers sign union membership cards, the Labour Relations Board will automatically certify UFCW as your bargaining agent and you and your fellow co-workers are recognized by law as members. If between 25 and 50% of the workers sign union cards, the LRB will order a secret ballet vote to determine if over 50% of the eligible workers want to be represented by a union. The decision is yours and yours alone.
