Safeway, Moose Jaw

From Negotiations Report May, 2008

After posting strike vote meeting notices, and following marathon bargaining sessions with the help of a conciliation officer on December 5 and 6, 2007, , a tentative Agreement was reached with Safeway in Moose Jaw.  On December 7, the members ratified this settlement, which will expire on August 9, 2008.  Members will receive an immediate wage increase of 50¢ per hour, retroactive to August 2007 and 25¢ per hour retroactive to August 2006.

Other highlights of this Agreement include:

  • Improved employer-paid dental contributions over the term of the Agreement and contributions to a CCWIPP stabilization fund.

  • Part-time employees will receive one additional date, at their discretion, to change their availability.

  • Language ensuring senior employees have the first right of refusal to work overtime hours.

  • Part-time employees will now be entitled to two rest periods in a five-hour shift when they work a full 37 hour week.

  • Clarification on “minimum” rates language when determining starting wage rates for new employees who are receiving credit for previous experience.

  • Employees working night shifts after 10:00 pm are now entitled to premium pay even if they do not work 24 hours in that week.

  • The new Family Day Statutory Holiday was written into the Agreement and all references to legislation were updated.

  • Parental and Adoption Leave language was included in the Agreement.

  • The definition of a grievance was improved to include better “just cause” protection language; also updated in the Arbitration Article section of the Agreement.

Other improvements to contract language included Courtesy Clerk promotions, employee hours protection for when the company brings manager trainees into the store, requesting volunteers from the store for assisting in store relines, member information the company is required to supply the union, and a number of other smaller improvements.

Congratulations to these members for standing together and sending a strong message to the company that they would not accept any concessions in their new Collective Agreement.  The hard working Bargaining Committee consisted of members Lynn Chernoff, Marianne Meacher, Rob Purdy and Pat Kinch. The committee was assisted by Collective Bargaining Representative Don Logan.

From Negotiations report December, 2007

Bargaining was held on August 23 and 24, October 15 and 16, and again on November 1 and 2, 2007. While progress has been made there are issues still unresolved including concessionary demands by the employer.  We finally received the employer’s wage offer at our last meetings where they offered very low wage increases to the top rates over a four year period. At bargaining update meetings held at the end of October, the members made it clear the proposals from the company were completely inadequate.

The company has agreed to participate in conciliation; the union has requested an appointment. We are hopeful that progress can be made with the help of a Conciliation Officer.

From Negotiations report August, 2007

With some smaller issues previously agreed upon, the parties were back at the table in April; however, several issues remain unresolved. The next set of negotiation dates is set for August 23 and 24, 2007. If progress is not made on these dates these members may be looking at taking a strike vote.
