National Defence Fund
What is the NDF?
The UFCW Canada National Defence Fund is a
simple but effective system, established in 1986, and made possible by the
solidarity of workers. The fund is an
optional, “opt-in” program through the United Food and Commercial Workers in
which individual Bargaining Units (rather than an entire local union) are able
to vote to join the fund.
Each Bargaining Unit member pays weekly into the fund, and the fund is invested to grow and be able to provide benefits to any participating Bargaining Unit in need.
All decisions are made by a democratic vote. If a Bargaining Unit chooses to join the NDF, it is by a vote of its members who will be making the weekly per-capita contribution.
When a Bargaining Unit votes to join the NDF, there is a minimum six-month waiting period before its members can begin collecting benefits.
The strike pay provided by the fund is in addition to the strike pay per week, or other benefits, that members are already entitled to.
For more information on the UFCW Canada National Defence Fund and how to join, please contact the Saskatoon office at 306.384.5787 or toll free at 1.800.274.4036 or view more information.
Shop Steward Spotlights
Spring 2007
Troy Pearce has been a Shop Steward with
Local 1400 for about two years. Troy has worked at Western Grocers in Yorkton
for eighteen years, most recently in
the position of Billing Clerk. Approximately two years ago, members
at this location of Western Grocers
voted to become members of UFCW Local 1400; it was at this time that Troy volunteered to become
a Shop Steward. Since then, he has completed both Level I and Level II Steward
training.
Troy was a Negotiation Committee member for his unit’s first set of negotiations two years ago and, as that Agreement is now up for renewal, he has been elected onto the Negotiation Committee once again by his fellow members.
His spouse April works at the Sobeys in Yorkton and is also a Local 1400 Shop Steward. They have two teenaged children; Dustin, 15, who plays football and basketball, and Drake, 13, who is involved in boxing; keeping their family busy traveling to games and matches.
In addition to working at Western Grocers, Troy also works at CJ Audio and volunteers his time to work with the Yorkton Thresherman’s Club. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, camping, being outside, working on vehicles, doing puzzles, listening to music, and eating great food.
On top of a full family and work life, Troy not only finds the time to volunteer as a Steward, helping his fellow members and generally helping whenever needed to make Western Grocers a better place to work, but he also gives his time and expertise to his community, passing on a piece of history to the youth of today through the work he does with the Thresherman’s Club. Troy is another example of the quality of member that volunteers to become Shop Stewards and fill other positions within their units and throughout their communities.
Troy, the members, staff and Executive Board of Local 1400 thank you and appreciate the time and commitment that you make for your fellow members, family and community and for giving such an excellent example of leadership in so many ways.
