Hello! Welcome to Local 1400's YOUTH WEB PAGE!!!  This web page is dedicated to union members ages 16-25!

Your Canadian Director, Michael J. Fraser has put forth an initiative to get youth involved with their local unions.  A National Youth Internship Program has been established, and now it is in the hands of the local unions to get their youth membership involved.  Local 1400 has set up a youth committee which is in the process of organizing methods of educating our youth membership.

If you are interested in getting involved with our committee and finding out more about YOUR union, please send us an email to:

ufcw@ufcw1400.ca

We sincerely hope you take the time to read and look through the items we have put on our web pages!

What’s Upcoming?

The Youth Committee continues to plan great events for UFCW members.

ü   Silent Auction - The UFCW Local 1400 Youth Committee is holding a silent auction on a Haley Wickenheiser autographed team Canada Jersey.

Born in Shaunavon, SK, Haley is an inspiration to girls across the country.  She plays centre/forward and was instrumental in the women's Team Canada win of the gold medal at the 2002 Olympics.

The opening bid has already come in for $50 .  The auction will be ongoing until July 1st, 2005, at which time the highest bid will take home this unique jersey.  To place a bid, please contact Brandi at blt1013@hotmail.com or by phone at (306) 230-2707.

The bidding will be updated weekly on this website’s home page.

ü   The next Youth Committee meeting is scheduled for May 1st, 2005 at 6:00 pm at the Saskatoon Union office.  Uncle Barley’s will be supplying the food for this meeting, please RSVP in advance to Brandi Tracksell at blt1013@hotmail.com or by calling her at the Saskatoon office.

ü   The Talking Union program is now underway in Saskatchewan.  Lots of young people never hear about unions except when they see them picketing or protesting on television.  In this program UFCW Youth Instructors will, by appointment, visit high schools and deliver an interactive program that will provide students with information on workplace rights and issues that are often unknown when they first enter the workforce such as what unions are and do, myths about unions, some labour history, and your rights at work.  For more information, Click Here for a .pdf brochure on the program.

Past Events

ü   UFCW Local 1400 Youth Committee hosted a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament on Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the Saskatoon UFCW Education & Training Centre.

On April 23, 2005 the Local 1400 Youth Committee hosted a Texas Hold’m Poker Tournament with approximately 40 people in attendance.  Players bought into the games for $20 and were allowed to buy in any number of times until 9:00 pm.  Door prizes were drawn for at the end of the first round.

The chip leaders from each of the tables played for cash prizes with the top three winners receiving $70 for third place, $100 for second place and $300 for first place.  However, in a show of brotherly solidarity, the first and second place winners decided to pool their winnings and then split it, taking home $200 each.

The event was extremely successful with the majority of the participants eagerly waiting for the next tournament to be organized.  We raised just over $460 for Leukemia Research and had a great time.

ü   The Curling Funspiel was held on March 12, 2005.  On Saturday, March 12, 2005, the Local’s Youth Committee hosted it’s first ever Curling Funspiel at the Hub City Curling Club.  There were 14 teams in and each team brought cheerleaders, so the event was a great success with well over 70 people in attendance.  Each team was guaranteed three – two end games with a few teams playing four – two end games.  The cost was a nominal $35 per team with each team taking home a prize.  Carey Wallace from Saskatoon Varsity Common IGA was the big winner of the night, taking home $201 as the winner of the 50/50 draw.  After all was said and done, the UFCW Local 1400 Youth Committee raised $424.50 to donate towards Leukemia Research.  Thank you to everyone who contributed towards making this event a huge success.

Best Costumed Team winners:  Shandel Telfor, Justin Ziola, Brett Zabos, Carey Wallace  (Bagpipers Bryon Urkhart and Troy Maurice and Coach Stacey Allen)
